All patients undergoing surgery with general anaesthesia must be nil per mouth at least 6 hours prior to the surgery. This means nothing to eat or drink! The only exception is for chronic medication, which may be taken with a small amount of water.
It is recommended that patients take their usual chronic medications on the day of surgery, with the exception of medication which interferes with blood clotting. Exceptions may include warfarin, Plavix, clopidogrel, aspririn, ecotrin, Xarelto, Pradaxa and anti-inflammatory medications.
Blood-thinning medication needs to be stopped well before admission for surgery. Please discuss this with Dr Welsh.
Admission to hospital for surgery can be a lengthy process. Undue delays can be reduced by completing pre-admission forms. Patients are still required to be at the hospital at least 2 hours before surgery. Patients are advised to bring a good book or magazine with them to help pass the time before going to theatre.
